Behavioral Health Services

John Muir Behavioral Health Services provides a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) offering outpatient behavioral health treatment to adults transitioning from inpatient programs or as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization. We offer crisis intervention and short-term stabilization through individualized treatment and medication management. The PHP provides therapy and psycho-education groups for men & women, aged 18 & over. Treatment is provided for all psychiatric diagnoses including dual diagnoses of mental health and addiction issues. Participants attend Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm, for two to four weeks. Lunch is included.

Patients meet in small groups of up to ten for group therapy. For most, it's an opportunity to share their experiences with others who truly understand what they're going through. The discovery that other people are dealing with similar issues is often a profound beginning to the healing process. Participants learn about mental illness, medication, cognitive-behavioral therapy tools and DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) skills for better living, coping strategies, problem solving, and effective communication. Mental health and addiction awareness are addressed in the program in support of ongoing abstinence and harm reduction of destructive behaviors. Participants who have substance abuse, as well as other behavioral issues, learn about the process of addiction, addictive thinking, dealing with cravings, relapse triggers, relapse prevention, and the recovery process. Family meetings can be arranged to provide education and enhance communication for participants and the people closest to them. These therapist-led sessions help participants and their families focus on treatment issues and solutions.

Participants meet individually with their psychiatrist who prescribes medication, as needed. In addition to individualized psychotherapy treatment plans, participants are given a medical physical and appropriate blood test(s). We provide daily nursing services and monitor laboratory results. Random drug screen testing may be used as a support for continued chemical dependency abstinence.

Part of the discharge process includes assisting patients with setting up ongoing psychiatric care and therapy. Working with insurance companies, we provide referrals for professional aftercare near home. We also supply referrals to many different types of community resources, ongoing support groups, and 12-step group meetings.
