- Smoking
- Chronic bladder problems (e.g., recurrent urinary tract infections, urinary stones, etc.)
- Occupational exposure to certain chemicals, especially in the dye, rubber, paint or leather industries
- Schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection that causes chronic inflammation
- Age (50 or older)
- Gender (three times more common in men)
- Family history of bladder cancer
- Race (For unknown reasons, bladder cancer is far more common in Caucasians than other ethnicities.)
