For asymptomatic individuals, there is currently no routine screening test for lung cancer. Routine chest x-rays and sputum cytology (microscopic analysis of phlegm) have not been shown to catch enough early lung cancers in the general population to enhance cure rates, and are therefore not considered effective screening tools.

However, patients considered at high risk for lung cancer (See "Risk Factors") should discuss with their physician whether ongoing monitoring via other specialized diagnostic tests is warranted. Regardless of any surveillance schedule your physician has recommended, do not delay seeking medical help if you should experience a persistent cough or any other symptoms.

We are here for education, support and to help you navigate your way through your diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
