Early-stage prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms. The first symptom is generally some form of urinary difficulty as the growing cancer begins to squeeze the urethra. Once symptoms are present, they may include:

• Frequent urination (especially at night)
• Weak urinary stream
• Inability to urinate
• Interruption of urinary stream (stopping and starting)
• Pain or burning when urinating
• Painful ejaculation
• Blood in urine or semen
• If the cancer has spread beyond the prostate to the bones, bone pain may occur, especially in the backbone (vertebrae), pelvis, hips, and ribs

Having one or more of these symptoms does not necessarily mean that you have prostate cancer; there are several benign urinary conditions that can cause the same symptoms. It is very important to see your physician as soon as possible to ensure that a proper diagnosis can be made.
