Getting Involved: Employee Volunteerism
As part of our commitment to community service, we encourage employees to volunteer for events and activities supported by John Muir Health - as well as for community organizations and projects in their own neighborhoods.
It is our belief that as long as anyone is without access to appropriate health care services, the community is less than it can be. That's why we strive to create healthier communities in collaboration with our employees, other providers, and community-based organizations.
Together we can maximize our impact on the health of the communities where we live and work. Volunteer opportunities include:
KAPOW
The "Kids and the Power of Work" program gives students the tools to gain career awareness, learn employability skills, and empowers them to connect school to the world of work through hands-on activities and interaction with business volunteers
Starts:
September each year
7-classroom visits (1hr. each month, Oct-May)

- 1.5 hour orientation
- 4 to 8 volunteers are needed
Nutrition and Fitness Modules
The Community Health Alliance has developed customizable and easily presented "Choosing Right" 30 minute lesson plans on health nutrition and physical fitness habits. We also have props and posters for you to check out, and we even supply a sample letter to send to your child's teacher to determine interest. We will walk you through all the steps to a successful presentation. No clinical background is required.

Opportunities are still available if health system employee does not have children in grade school.
Project Read
A volunteer reading program coordinated through Mt. Diablo Unified School District. Volunteers are matched with first or second graders considered being academically "at risk". Volunteers read with students for a ½ hour each week during the lunch hour for 10 weeks.

Healthy Heart Monthly Events
In honor of National Heart Month, John Muir Health hosts an event that provides health screenings, information, education, and risk reduction for patients with cardiac disease, their family members, and the community.

B.E.S.T
"Business Educators Shadowing for Tomorrow". Teachers gain experience to better relate what they teach to the future jobs of their students by shadowing business volunteers.

Behavioral Health Center - Volunteer Department
Volunteers provide a variety of essential services that assist patients, visitors, physicians and staff. They work through the Creative Therapies Department assisting in groups and working individually with patients ages 4 and up.

Caring Hands Volunteer Caregivers
Caring Hands enables frail, isolated, and disabled seniors (over 60 years of age) to stay in their homes, and remain independent, as long as safely possible by providing free non-medical in-home assistance. Our services include: transportation and escort services, errands and shopping, friendly visiting and companionship, phone calling, and respite care, as well as minor home repairs and yard work, light household chores and light meal preparation, letter writing and reading assistance.

1-3 hours per week, non-medical in-home services. Volunteers may choose their own schedules and the communities in which they would like to serve.
Every 15 Minutes
Trauma Services provides crash scene enactment aimed at increasing awareness among teens and their parents of the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol. Volunteers are needed for the preparation of the 'crash scene' and 'hospital scene'.
6 events per school year
2-3 hours per event.
Foster A Dream Mentoring
A little of your time can make a BIG difference. Be a mentor, and serve as a positive permanent connection as well as an education and career advocate, supporting Bay Area youth in their transition out of the foster care system. By the way, you don't have to have all the answers...that's our job.

Grief Support Program
Volunteers are needed for our "correspondence program" which is a series of twelve letters sent to each client during the first year of grief. Volunteers must be able to use a computer, handle a high volume of paper, and work well with a team.

John Muir Health - Concord Campus Volunteer Department
The volunteer department supports the medical center with their efforts in fund-raising and community education. Volunteers provide a variety of essential services that assist patients, visitors, physicians and staff. The volunteers also operate the gift shop, run a junior volunteer program and annually sponsor scholarship programs for students.

John Muir Health - Concord Campus Cancer Resource Center
Accepting volunteers who wish to maintain the books, tapes and videos for our patients to borrow, in addition to maintaining the articles and booklets for patients in the Cancer Dept.

John Muir Outpatient Center
Volunteers at the Tice Valley / Rossmoor campus, assist patients and visitors at the Information Desk, provide Hostess Services at community health forums, assist with Mall Service, and operate the Medical Equipment Loan Program which serves the needs of the community by providing essential medical equipment for a loan period of up to 90 days.

John Muir Health - Walnut Creek Campus Auxiliary
The John Muir Medical Center - Walnut Creek Campus Auxiliary supports John Muir Health with major fund-raising efforts including the Garret Thrift Shop; Galleria Gift Shop; and the Annual Golf Tournament. Community outreach programs include Docent tours, Child Safety Seat Program, Trauma Closet and The Wig Source; an annual scholarship program for graduating Walnut Creek Campus high school student volunteers who meet the requirements. The Auxiliary is supported by the various Guilds.

John Muir Health -Walnut Creek Campus Volunteer Department --Adult In-service Volunteers.
Volunteers, many of whom are Auxiliary members, provide a variety of essential services assisting patients, visitors, medical staff and employees throughout the medical center and at off-site locations including the Women's Health Center, Muir Lab and the Atrium. Volunteer assignments may include patient contact or no patient contact.

John Muir Health -Walnut Creek Campus Student Volunteers
High School students will be training throughout the medical center. After six weeks training, students will be able to fill new spots. Please call if your department could benefit from the services provided by these students.

Mobile Health Clinic
Volunteer physicians, nurses, medical assistants, and the support staff from the John Muir Physician Network and hospitals provide free primary care to those who have no health insurance; referrals are made for Ongoing care. The Mobile Health Clinic operates on the first four Saturdays of each month in Brentwood.

Village Drive Resource Center Brentwood
Mobile Health Clinic - RN Volunteers Work with Students
Seeking RN volunteers who would like to work with nursing students in a non traditional environment, supporting both our community and future professionals. CSUEB will have students in a community health rotation during the summer at the John Muir Mobile Health Clinic. This clinic assists the uninsured and underserved in Brentwood, Bryon, and far east Contra Costa County. The ability to speak Spanish is a plus, but not a necessity.
The John Muir RN would volunteer her time and expertise. Training and on-site orientation would be provided to the RN prior to the student clinical rotation. A diverse learning experience will be provided to "prospective employees".

On Track Program.
Along with the Contra Costa County Volunteer Program the On Track Program with the Mt. Diablo Adult Education is a program designed to help individuals with Traumatic and Acquired Brain Injury. The program focuses on cognitive skills, community re-entry skills, personal and social growth as well as daily living skills.

Senior Services Blood Pressure Screener
Nurses or trained volunteers provide blood pressure screening to older adults monthly at 7 locations in Central Contra Costa County and health fairs. Additional volunteers needed for current sites and for program expansion.

Daffodil Days Fundraising Event
John Muir Health seeks volunteers to help sell daffodils to raise critically needed funds for the fight against cancer.

Walk America
Health system employees have organized a team to walk by raising funds for neonatal services.

NAMI Walk San Francisco Bay Area
Anyone may join in the 5 & 1.5 K walk in the Park to raise funds for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. Location of walk: Speedway Meadow, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA. Go on-line to register www.nami.org. Select NAMI WALKS For the Mind of America.

Foster A Dream Gala
Volunteers needed for annual fundraising event, held at the Rotunda Building in Oakland. Funds raised will support the needs and dreams of Bay Area foster youth with programs and services, mentors, college scholarships, and much more.

Health system employees organize a team, or teams, to complete a relay-walk to raise funds for cancer research, education and service. If you are interested in joining a team or forming a new one, call contacts for more information.

Brentwood Cornfest
John Muir Health has a booth at this community festival that runs for 3 days and draws over 40,000 people. Volunteers are needed to take blood pressure, answer questions, and introduce residents to the many services at our Brentwood Campus in addition to the other medical centers and offices located throughout Contra Costa County. Volunteers get free admission.

Heart Walk
As a corporate sponsor, Health System is looking for volunteers to walk in the Heart Walk and help raise money for fund research and education to reduce heart disease and stroke by securing pledge sponsors for walkers. Join a team or call if you need help finding one. There are opportunities to work at an informational table as well.

Extraordinary Care for Women Event
Free health screenings, raffles, educational materials, food and fun attract participants regionally. The Fair provides valuable information on community programs, classes, products and support to empower women to make healthy choices for themselves and their families.
