"My advice is to consider the way you are treated during your preceptorship. Everyone here, including the physicians, reached out to me and offered assistance. They made time to tell me 'This is the reason we do things this way,' so I understood what I had to do."

Michelle W., RN, BSN, Med/Surg, Concord.

RN Residency Program

Our RN Residency Program for summer 2008 is currently full. We anticipate offering our next RN Residency Program during the winter of 2008. Please check back at that time to learn more about the program and the upcoming schedule. For further information about current job postings, you are welcome to visit our careers page.

Thank you for your interest in John Muir Health!

Hands-On Learning

Your Preceptors are unit-based RNs who will work with you one-to-one to impart technical and professional role knowledge and performance expectations to help develop your clinical decision-making skills. Count on approximately 450 hours of intense learning.

Qualified nurses and health care professionals will steer you through over 180 hours of classroom and skills lab education.

Expert Navigators

A Mentor is selected for each Resident to steer you through the complexities of the nursing profession. You'll also have a Preceptor who will work with you, side-by-side, for five months to support you as you learn and grow.

Inter-related Units

Individualized rotations [or "looping"] during your 5-month Residency will familiarize you with other departments related to the unit you are assigned to work in or your 'home' unit.

We support your progress from day one...from reimbursement for the NCLEX Preparatory Course to follow up with a Student Loan Forgiveness Program. Eligible courses of study are an AA degree in Nursing, and on-site RN-to-BSN/MSN Programs with an award up to $5,000 a year for a maximum benefit of $15,000. We also offer up to $15,000 a year with a maximum benefit of $30,000 for a BSN study course.

Specialty Areas:

The John Muir Behavioral Health Center partners with four Bay area nursing schools to provide clinical training for their BSN, MSN programs as well as colleges and universities for social service, creative therapies, and counselor clinical pre-creatorship training. This offers our staff the opportunity to teach new nurses, social workers, counseling staff, and creative therapists while updating their skills and knowledge.

Our staff is a mixture of experienced and new graduate nurses and our orientation programs are individualized to meet the learning needs of each new hire. Nurses who are selected have the critical thinking skills to make decisions, and the Nurse Managers work with staff to develop required competencies in the specialty of psychiatric nursing. During the orientation period, new hires complete on-line courses, classroom lectures, and clinical preceptorships in their assigned unit, based on individual needs. Nurses have the opportunity to be cross-trained in other units to have flexibility and expand their skill base.

Emergency/Trauma

Experienced RNs who decide to make a career change into the Emergency Department are provided with a customized orientation and training program. Depending upon the need, new staff to the Department will be paired for 4-6 weeks with an experienced RN preceptor for in-depth, one-on-one training in the Emergency Department environment. In addition, for those RNs who have no Telemetry experience, the 8-Week Cardiac Care Course provides a comprehensive introduction to cardiovascular care.

Surgery

The Concord campus has a 6-month surgery program, where a new grad, if accepted, is trained and paid as a Level I nurse. Our Master's Prepared Educator, Charge Nurses and Surgical Administration supervise this program. The program consists of a didactic course dealing with all aspects of surgery, and rotation through all services where they learn the practical side of scrubbing and circulating as they work with an experienced mentor.

Upon completing the New Grad course the nurse should have a strong grasp of the knowledge and clinical skills needed to work in surgery. Nurses who have a special interest in a particular service line continue to improve their skills and gravitate to that service. We believe in continual education, supporting outside conference attendance, training and continual exposure to in-house services.
