"It's a wonderful, team-oriented working environment. On the floor, you're never alone...there's always someone to lend a hand or answer your questions. Management supports you in every way - whether you want to go for a higher degree, change to a different specialty, or take time off to go to class. What I like best is the opportunity to help people who are in immediate need 24/7!"

"When I worked as a helicopter nurse, we flew into hospitals as far north as Ukiah and as far south as San Luis Obispo. Since John Muir Health in Walnut Creek is a Trauma Center we flew here frequently, which gave me a pretty good idea of what the staff was like. I figured I'd be spending a big chunk of my life at work so I wanted to spend it with people who are nice. I found that to be true of the John Muir staff consistently. So that's the main reason I chose to work here."

"I'd been a nurse for 15 years before I joined John Muir Health. I just liked it on first sight - after looking at all the other area hospitals. I did my homework on the Web and read about their patient satisfaction surveys - and that told me that their nurses were happy, too. When I interviewed, I really liked the manager and the whole attitude towards nurses."
The Joint Commission recently awarded our Concord and Walnut Creek campuses Primary Stroke Center certification, and the Directors of Emergency Services are strong advocates for their employees, determined to give them everything they need to make a difference in life-and-death situations. We call it ultimate teamwork in a collegial environment where passion and collaboration are highly valued.
John Muir Health Concord campus has one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the County with 26 treatment bays that handle nearly 50,000 patients a year. We are a preeminent center for sophisticated cancer and cardiac care, including open-heart surgery and interventional cardiology. Other specialty areas include general surgery, orthopedics and neurology. The high patient acuity level demands our commitment to remain at the forefront of new technologies. Our ED ranks in the top 5 percent of 100+ bed hospitals for overall rating of care and treatment, and we won the ED Team Award for 2006 by our physician group, California Emergency Physicians, from among 60 other sites!
John Muir Health Walnut Creek campus has long been recognized as a leading acute care facility. We were recently honored as one of the "Best Hospitals for Emergencies" by a leading Bay Area consumer publication. The Trauma Program reflects the Medical Center's commitment to critical care medicine - maintaining a strong emphasis on emergency medicine, surgery, orthopedics, neurosciences and rehabilitation.
Our Emergency Department nurses initiate accurate and ongoing assessment of physical, psychological, and social problems of patients within the emergency care system. They analyze the assessment data, formulate a nursing diagnosis and identify patient problems. If an identification of expected outcomes is noted, then a plan of care is formulated. After interventions are identified and implemented, the ED nurse evaluates and modifies the plan of care based on the assessment of patient response and the attainment of expected outcomes.
The ED nurse works in a collaborative manner as a member of a multidisciplinary team including RTs, X-ray, Lab, noninvasive Cardiology, Nutrition Services, Pastoral Care, and other inpatient areas. The ED nurse utilizes strong communication skills with such disciplines to provide the highest quality care possible.
Experienced RNs who decide to make a career change into the Emergency Department are provided with a customized orientation and training program. Depending upon the need, new staff to the Department will be paired for 4-6 weeks with an experienced RN preceptor for in-depth, one-on-one training in the Emergency Department environment. In addition, for those RNs who have no Telemetry experience, the 8-Week Cardiac Care Course provides a comprehensive introduction to cardiovascular care.
Since 1986 the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek has served as Contra Costa County's only Trauma Center. It received permanent designation as the county's only Level Regional II Trauma Center in 1992. Saving lives is the major goal of the trauma team, but it is only the beginning of a comprehensive program of care that extends from emergency treatment through the rehabilitation phase.
The trauma team is staffed around the clock by extraordinary providers, including physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals who have received special training in the treatment of critical injuries to the head, spine, and vital organs. A Trauma Surgeon is in-house 24 hours a day, and Neurosurgeons, Orthopedic Surgeons, and other medical and surgical specialists are promptly available at any hour - day or night. Members of the Social Services and Pastoral Care departments serve a vital role for John Muir's trauma patients and their families.
Patients treated at the John Muir Trauma Center are brought directly by helicopter or ambulance to the medical center from scenes of accidents in Contra Costa and Solano Counties.
New graduate RNs are welcomed and embraced into the Emergency Department team. As with all of the Medical Center's new RN graduates, each new graduate RN in the Emergency Department receives the benefit of an extensive 5-Month RN Residency Program. In addition, each new graduate RN is paired with an experienced RN preceptor to learn clinical Emergency Nursing. New graduate RNs also receive a 4-week course in Emergency Nursing theory based on case study modules developed by the Emergency Nursing Association. Finally, our new graduate RNs are enrolled in our popular 8-Week Cardiac Care Course, in which an in-depth, comprehensive introduction to cardiovascular care is explored.
