Key Areas of Expansion

John Muir Medical Center, Concord Campus

Centralized Cardiovascular Institute - Will occupy 3 levels of the new Patient Care Tower. The new CVI will include 12 pre-operative/ recovery beds, a dedicated cardiovascular intensive care unit with 12 private beds, 49 new private telemetry beds, and 4 Cardiac Catheterization Labs with space available for additional expansion.

Emergency Department - Will occupy the main floor of the new Patient Care Tower. The number of Emergency Treatment rooms will increase from 22 to 32 treatment stations with wiring in each room that allows for registration, patient education, and discharge to occur all in one place. All rooms will be private to assist with infection control, noise and privacy. A Medical Imaging suite will be located within the Emergency Department, and will include a state-of-the-art CT scanner, digital X-ray and ultrasound.

Increase number of private rooms - The number of private rooms will increase by 61 with space for the future addition of more private beds. These large rooms will provide space to accommodate patients, staff, and families - as well as the latest in technology, and help speed healing and ensure privacy

Special design features - Will include an emphasis on creating a healing, non-institutional environment with a well-balanced integration of natural light, color, texture, and varied ceiling heights, as well as wiring for mobile computers, electronic medical records, and personal electronic devices.

Remodeled B-Tower Patient Care Areas - Critical Care Units on the third floor, and Nursing Units on Floors 4 and 5 in the existing B-Tower will be remodeled to update the units with more space and capacity for technology, treatment and patient care.

John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek Campus

Critical Care Services - 24 new, private critical care rooms will be located adjacent to surgery in the new patient care tower. These larger rooms will be able to accommodate more equipment and the latest technology at the bedside, and include the availability of around-the-clock, real-time audio and video monitoring of ICU patients.

Emergency Department - The number of Emergency Treatment rooms will double from 22 to 44. Imaging technology will be available within the Emergency Department.

Neonatal Intensive Care - The region's first Level III Intensive Care Nursery will add 15 new beds for a total of 34 state-of-the-art infant beds. The unit will include lighting to mimic day/night cycles, and a combination of private and semi-private rooms for critically ill newborns, with sleep chairs for parents.

Trauma Center -The only designated trauma center for Contra Costa County and parts of Marin and Solano Counties will contain four new custom-designed trauma suites. A dedicated critical-care elevator will help speed patients directly from the relocated rooftop helipad to the Trauma Center.

Surgery Department - Inpatient surgical suites will increase to 13, and be located adjacent to the ICU. Surgical suites will have space for current and future technology, as will pre-operative and recovery areas. The post-operative unit will be expanded to 27 beds.
