Funding Process

Our funding process is unlike that of any other grantmaking program. Rather than the typical filling out of forms and waiting around for a yes or no answer, we ask applicants to engage in a series of conversations. In those conversations, we assess whether the potential exists for a truly productive health partnership, one in which we can work together on a specific health initiative that can change people's lives.

While the process is unique for each applicant, there are some general principles and guidelines. First, we discuss a health need in the community and get some sense of whether we share your sense of urgency around it. Next, we gauge whether you have the capacity - either alone or with other community organizations - to develop and implement an initiative that is equal to the need. Third, we explore whether you can make a genuine commitment to this partnership - from your board members through your line staff. These discussions move through three basic phases: exploration, forging a commitment, and funding. Each phase ends with a decision about whether to move to the next phase.

We understand that this process demands an unusual, up front commitment of time and energy. As we move further along, however, the risks of that commitment shrink, because the process builds in trust and understanding, enabling you to truly capitalize on the strengths you bring to the process. The result is always an innovative health initiative that builds and sustains the capacity to deliver on the promise of good health and affordable health care for all.
