What You Need to Know About HIPAA

Patients who visit the John Muir Physician Network physician offices will notice certain new practices related to the way we use and disclose their personal health information. The privacy rules under the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), effective April 14, 2004, also give patients additional rights to obtain access to their own information.

Although the John Muir Physician Network has had a policy of patient confidentiality in place for many years, the new privacy rules go further. They ensure that the John Muir Physician Network and its affiliated health care providers follow certain regulations when they use and disclose patients' information for the purpose of providing treatment, obtaining payment and for their own internal operations. For example, the privacy rule stipulates that the John Muir Physician Network employees may be provided with only the minimum necessary amount of patient information in order to do their jobs.
