Concord Campus Receives Blue Shield Cardiac Quality Designation

John Muir Medical Center, Concord Campus is one of 20 California hospitals, and one of six Bay Area hospitals that has met the criteria for participation in the 2007 Blue Shield of California Cardiac Quality Initiative.

Blue Shield launched their Cardiac Quality Initiative in 2005 to improve value for its members and customers by improving access to high quality cardiac providers. The programs that meet their criteria have demonstrated an institutional commitment to cardiac care by continually improving quality and measuring and demonstrating results.

To be considered for this designation, hospitals must perform a minimum of 150 cardiac surgeries and 300 percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) per year. Inclusion in Blue Shield's program was also based upon CABG and PCI mortality, processes including CABG use of IMA and time to PCI, and participation in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and American College of Cardiology databases. There will be two ongoing efforts in the Blue Shield Cardiac Quality Initiative. First, Blue Shield will work with interested California cardiac programs to improve data reporting and measurement and to disseminate best care practices. The second effort will be to communicate the information on cardiac quality to Blue Shield members in a way that they find useful in their care decision making. Hospitals that meet Cardiac Quality Initiative criteria are designated on the Blue Shield website with a heart symbol in the Hospital Comparison Tool and highlighted in the Cardiac Quality Initiative.
