First job : Director of a tissue culture laboratory.
Business philosophy : Let's get it all out on the table.
How do you stay motivated : Knowing that other people depend on me.
Guiding principle : Understanding other people's points of view. I try to really get into their mind-set and understand how they think.
Definition of success : Completing things.
Goal yet to be achieved : Visiting Cairo, Egypt, and taking a cruise down the Nile River.
Best decision : To leave my job at UCSF and take a job at John Muir in the East Bay, where I live. It cut out my long commute.
Worst decision : Not following a dancing career. My mother wanted me to be a ballerina. I gave it up because I wasn't that good a dancer.
Definition of leadership : I taught leadership courses in the Naval reserve, and the thing we impressed upon people is that your leadership needs to be strong enough that your sailors are ready to die for you.
Biggest missed opportunity : Not realizing that there were other kinds of dancing and performing I could have done other than ballet dancing, which was killing my toes. I really loved performing and being on stage and still do.
Mentor : My mother. She taught me to follow through and complete a task.
Word that best describes you : Enthusiastic.
Like best about job : Mentoring my vice presidents.
Like least about job : All the night dinner meetings. There are at least three a week.
Interests : International travel, genealogical research and keeping up with my kids and grandchildren.
Pet peeve : Waiting in line.
Person most interested in meeting : There are 256 people. It's my grandparents to the sixth power. I would love to speak with each of those people who I share genes, history and culture with.
Greatest fear : My own imagination. It's quite vivid and I can imagine anything. I can scare myself.
Greatest strength : Optimism and perseverance. I never give up.
Characteristic most admired : Honesty.
Characteristic most deplored : Arrogance.
First choice for a new career : Working on for-profit corporate boards.
Favorite quote : "Where there's a will, there's a way."
Current state of mind : Always looking forward.
How do you deal with disappointment : Eating Texas soul food - such as barbecued ribs and Tex-Mex. I was brought up in Texas and soul food is very consoling.
How do you deal with stress : I don't get stressed very often.
Exercise of choice : Going to Oakwood Athletic Club in Lafayette and working out on the treadmill, weight machine and free weights. And I do yoga about once a week.
Question you want answered : Is there life on other planets or in other universes?
Most influential book : The most influential book is the first book I ever read because it showed me there's a whole world in books. That would be my first-grade reader, "Fun with Dick and Jane."
Most cherished possession : My excellent health.
