John Muir Health Department of Pharmacy provides patient-focused pharmacy care to patients and health care providers throughout the Health Care system. In addition to preparation and distribution of medications for inpatient use, we provide professional consultations for clinicians, patients and their families, monitoring of key laboratory levels and adjustment of medication, and parenteral nutrition. With an eye toward patient safety, the Department uses the latest automated technologies to screen orders for duplication and allergies, automate distribution of medications, and control inventory.

Clinical Trials

John Muir Health Pharmacy Department supports clinical trials involving investigational drugs at our inpatient facilities and infusion center. There are currently several trials underway at the Pharmacy, including:

• SAINT II and CHANT Ð two trials investigating the use of a new medication for use in both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke
• LIPOS Ð a trial investigating the benefit of a lipid product in treating sepsis
• Tolvaptan Ð a trial investigating the benefit of the new medication Tolvaptan in patients with heart failure
• NIH-sponsored Oncology Studies Ð various trials of new regimens and new agents in the chemotherapeutic treatment of cancer

Patient Safety & Quality Improvement

The Pharmacy Department at John Muir Health is actively involved in improving patient safety and has taken specific steps in support of the National Patient Safety Goals of 2005, which include:

• Improve the accuracy of patient identification
• Improve the effectiveness of communication among caregivers
• Improve the safety of using medications
• Improve the safety of using infusion pumps
• Reduce the risk of health care-associated infections
• Accurately and completely reconcile medications across the continuum of care
• Reduce the risk of patient harm resulting from falls
