Inside the Clinical Lab
Clinical Lab Operations is located at the John Muir Walnut Creek Campus:
- Our clinical laboratory is staffed with over 600 exceptionally well-trained, dedicated and conscientious professionals.
- These devoted individuals work with a number of other departments within the Health System to provide exceptional service to our patients and customers.
The Clinical Laboratory Science Practitioners:
- With the exception of the phlebotomists, who draw and label blood samples, other clinical laboratory practitioners typically have little to no direct contact with the patients.
- The primary contribution of these professionals takes place behind the scenes within the clinical lab. Their expertise is crucial to the overall testing and resulting process:
- Medical laboratory technicians (MLT)
- Clinical laboratory Scientists( CLS) (also called medical technologists)
- Specialized practitioners:
- Histotechnicians (HT) and Histotechnologist (HLT): specializing in the preparation of biopsies from body tissue such as bone or organs for clinical analysis.
- Blood bank Specialists (SBB): trained in the functions of blood banks and transfusion services
- Cytotechnologists (CT): screen and analyze the Pap smear specimens for cervical cancer and other abnormal conditions.
