Caring Hands is a collaborative effort of John Muir Health, congregations of various religious faiths, social service agencies, and the community at large. Our mission is to create one-on-one matches between caring volunteers and isolated, frail and disabled seniors over the age of 60, enabling them to remain in their homes as long as safely possible.

To request a volunteer application contact Linda Groobin, Volunteer Coordinator, at (925) 952-2999.

The Caring Hands office is located in the Shadelands Business Park area of Walnut Creek, with ample surface parking, away from the mid-day congestion of Downtown Walnut Creek and an easy drive to restaurants and shops.

Our life-enhancing services include:

  • Friendly phone calling (in conjunction with any other service)
  • Friendly visiting and companionship, transportation and escort to medical appointments and other needed services
  • Assistance with shopping and errands
  • Respite care (or rest for the family caregiver)
  • Reading mail and letter writing
  • Light household tasks and light meal preparation
  • Minor home repairs and yard work

All services are generally provided 1-3 hours per week to meet a long term need, and are based on the availability of volunteers. Read more

Next Steps:

  1. Schedule an interview with our Volunteer Coordinator at (925) 952-2999. We will tell you about the program, find out what services you are interested in providing, when you are available to volunteer, and where you would like to volunteer in order to make a good match.
  2. Attend one of our Mandatory Volunteer Training Sessions. The training session will not only prepare you for your match, but will provide information that may help with your own aging parents or other family members.
  3. We will create a one-on-one match between you and a frail, isolated, and disabled senior over the age of 60.
  4. Meet your match! Begin your service and gain the satisfaction in knowing you have made a difference in someone's life.
