Brighter Beginnings: East County African American Health Initiative

Health disparities – differences in health status that are typically attributable to differences in access to care among various population segments – have been well documented in Contra Costa County. Medically uninsured African American residents in east Contra Costa are among those whose health is compromised by inadequate access to care.

To help address this issue, the John Muir/Mt. Diablo Community Health Fund (CHF) has awarded Brighter Beginnings a one-year, $50,000 program support grant to address existing gaps in health care services and wellness programs.

The grant enables Brighter Beginnings to launch its East County African American Health Initiative, a community engagement process aimed at informing and shaping a culturally sensitive outreach plan that will generate awareness and use of Brighter Beginnings’ new Antioch Family Health Center. To help facilitate the effort, Brighter Beginnings will contract with Emerald HPC International, LLC, an Antioch-based consulting firm with more than two decades of work building trust in the community and with local nonprofits.
