UCSF-John Muir Health Cancer Network

UCSF Health and John Muir Health are building a world-class cancer network to improve cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care coordination for cancer patients throughout the East Bay. Our first site is located at the Berkeley Outpatient Center.

Cancer specialists provide the full range of clinical care at Cancer Center Berkeley, part of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. This includes treatment for both newly diagnosed and metastatic cancer patients, as well as ongoing surveillance and survivorship care. For patients with breast cancer or benign breast conditions, breast surgeons offer evaluation and workup, as well as the latest minimally invasive techniques. 

Our physicians use a multidisciplinary approach to comprehensively evaluate the most complex cancer cases.  Our tumor boards play a critical role in multidisciplinary cancer care.  At tumor board conferences, the cases of individual cancer patients are thoroughly reviewed by a team of physicians and other health professionals from different specialties with unique perspectives and together the team of experts recommend the most comprehensive and state-of-the art approach to each patient’s treatment recommendation.

Clinical Trials

A clinical trial is a kind of research that involves treatment and people. Clinical trials help researchers answer questions such as whether a new treatment or medical device is safe, is a new treatment doing what it is supposed to do or is it better than a current treatment, which patients benefit the most from the new treatment, and so on.

UCSF is currently conducting a clinical trial in colorectal cancer survivors. The trial studies the effect of four different intervention component "tools" (text messaging, digital health tool kit, health coaching, or support person training) on body weight, nutrition, and physical activity. Studies indicate that people with colorectal cancer whose nutrition and physical activity habits are consistent with the American Cancer Society's Nutrition and Physical Activity Guidelines may have longer disease-free survival. The four different intervention components may help patients with colon or rectal cancer adopt recommended health behaviors after they have completed treatment.

To refer a patient, please fax the following information to the fax number listed below. While referral is processing, patient can schedule an appointment online.

  • Insurance Authorization (if required)
  • Copy of insurance card, front & back
  • Any relevant clinic or hospitalization notes, diagnostic test results and imaging
  • Patient’s daytime contact information
