Expert Pediatric Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Care—Close To Home

For parents in Contra Costa County and surrounding communities, having a child with a complex medical condition used to mean spending lots of time traveling all over the Bay Area for visits with children’s specialists.

Through our collaboration with Stanford Children’s Health, we provide our community’s children with consultation and expert care for a wide range of orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions, including sports injuries, for children of all ages.

In addition to your pediatric orthopedist, your child’s care team may also include nurses and other healthcare providers—all who have advanced training in specifically treating children and teens.

Meet Your Doctors

Charles Chan, MD

Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery

Having a sports injury can be both frightening and disappointing for a young athlete. I strive to provide a warm and reassuring experience while helping children recover from their injury. My goal is to help each child return to their sport using both surgical and non-surgical treatments while also emphasizing injury prevention. I tailor each treatment plan according to the child's stage of development and am particularly proud when I able to help realize each childs athletic ambitions.

I feel extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work with young athletes. While sports injuries in the growing child present their own set of unique challenges, nothing is more rewarding than seeing the smiles on my patients' faces when they return to their sport.

Scott Hoffinger, MD

Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery

My job is great. I get to meet new people, create a plan to fix them, and then see the results of that plan. Plus I get to work with kids — the little ones I can play with, the older ones I can joke with all while reassuring the parents that achieving the best outcome is our number one priority. It is a privilege to become a part of so many families, earn their trust and help them.

I remember once seeing a telethon story about a boy who lost most of his leg and the surgeon reconstructed his leg and grew new bone. They showed the boy walking, playing basketball, and when he turned toward the camera, I saw that he was my patient. Knowing my team did that was a humbling feeling. No matter what we can help. I want patients and families to know that there is so much we can do. I love to accomplish things that others say cant be done. I am not content with merely doing a good job — I want things to be perfect.

James Policy, MD

Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery

I aim to treat each child I see as if they were one of my own. I have two sons, and have been through multiple medical issues with each of them. As a physician, I feel it is important to view each encounter from the perspective of the parent and child. I ask myself, "What would I recommend for my own son?" That allows me to provide the best care possible.

In pediatric orthopedics we are fortunate in that we get to see the results of our work in real time. When I treat a child with a severe fracture or spinal deformity, and six months later they are back to a normal life, I am thrilled to have played a part in their recovery. It is very fulfilling to see the results of improved quality of life and function in the children we treat — nothing compares to that.

Erin Grieb, MD

Sports Medicine Pediatrician

One of the many reasons I love pediatric sports medicine is that I enjoy working with young athletes. I take great pride in helping injured athletes return to their sport and establish a lifetime love of sports and physical activity. I also enjoy teaching them how to prevent injuries.

I am continually impressed by my patients' abilities and resilience both when they are playing their sport and in their everyday lives. I want to support them as they strive to reach their full potential.
