In early stages, breast cancer typically produces no symptoms. A new lump or mass - which may or may not be painful - is commonly the first symptom, frequently discovered by women during breast self-examination. However, it's important to note that the vast majority of breast lumps are NOT cancerous.

The presence of these symptoms does not necessarily mean that you have breast cancer. There are a number of common, non-malignant conditions that can cause some of the same symptoms, including cysts, infections, fibrocystic changes, or benign growths known as fibroadenomas. However, because breast cancer is more difficult to treat once it has reached an advanced stage, it is important to see your physician as soon as possible if you should discover a lump. Your physician will arrange for the appropriate diagnostic tests to ensure that a proper diagnosis can be made.
