Because the early symptoms of esophageal cancer can be subtle - or resemble common maladies such as indigestion - diagnosis is frequently delayed until the cancer has reached an advanced stage. The first notable symptom of esophageal cancer is usually difficulty in swallowing solid food (dysphagia). As the cancer progresses over weeks or months, patients may begin to experience difficulty in swallowing soft foods and then liquids. Significant weight loss can result.

Because advanced esophageal cancer is very difficult to treat, it's important to see your doctor as soon as possible if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms. People with long-term reflux disease should consult their physician rather than relying on over-the-counter medications. Having one or more of the symptoms above does not necessarily mean that you have esophageal cancer; there are a number of esophageal disorders that can cause similar symptoms. Your physician will arrange for the appropriate diagnostic tests to ensure that a proper diagnosis can be made and treatment initiated at once.
