Because pancreatic cancer causes no significant symptoms in the early stages, diagnosis is frequently delayed until the cancer has reached an advanced stage. At the time of diagnosis, approximately 90 percent of patients have unexplained weight loss and upper abdominal pain that may be severe and radiate to the back.

Because advanced pancreatic cancer is very difficult to treat, it is important to see your doctor as soon as possible if you are experiencing any symptoms. Having one or more of these symptoms does not necessarily mean that you have pancreatic cancer; there are a several benign disorders that can cause similar symptoms. Also, there are a number of non-cancerous tumors that may arise in the pancreas. Your physician will arrange for the appropriate diagnostic tests to ensure that a proper diagnosis can be made and treatment initiated at once.
