The John Muir Cancer Institute offers individualized genetic risk assessment, counseling and testing services.

Our genetic counselor is available to assess your personal medical and family history for hereditary cancer risk. She can determine who may be at higher risk of developing cancer because of major hereditary factors.

Not everyone needs genetic risk assessment...What makes me a good candidate?

Hereditary Breast and Ovarian

If you have a personal or family history of:

  • Breast cancer under age 50
  • Bilateral breast cancer
  • Male breast cancer
  • Ovarian cancer at any age
Hereditary Colorectal and/or Endometrial

If you have a personal or family history of:

  • Either colorectal or endometrial cancer under age 50
  • Multiple polyps of the colon
  • Multiple relatives with similar cancers in the family

Other Cancer Syndromes

There are rare other familial patterns of cancer that may indicate a syndrome. Your doctor may wish to discuss these with you.

Will insurance cover this?

Most private health insurance companies cover genetic counseling and/or testing. Our team will work together to obtain authorization before any office visits of procedures.
