At John Muir Health we offer a number of Radiation Therapy Services and Techniques.
3-Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy
An advanced treatment technique is three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, in which external radiation beams are contoured precisely to the shape of the tumor. This technique saves healthy tissue to the greatest extent possible. The doctor uses a special CT (computed tomogram) which is downloaded into the treatment planning computer. The doctor outlines, with an electronic "pen", the target area to be treated and also the sensitive areas to be avoided. The dosimetrist then designs a custom plan based on the doctor's instructions.
We are here for education, support and to help you navigate your way through your diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
Permanent radioactive seed implants are a form of radiation therapy for prostate cancer, also known as brachytherapy. During the procedure, radioactive seeds are implanted into the prostate gland using an ultrasound guide. The number of seeds and where they are placed is determined by a computer-generated treatment plan customized for each patient.
The implants remain in place permanently, and become inactive after several months. This technique allows a high dose of radiation to be delivered to the prostate with limited damage to surrounding tissues.
Your doctor will discuss your treatment options and determine whether this procedure is best for you.
