What are the Symptoms?

Because the early symptoms of stomach cancer can be vague - or resemble such common maladies as indigestion - diagnosis is frequently delayed until the cancer has reached a more advanced stage.
The most common symptoms of stomach cancer include:
- Indigestion or stomach discomfort
- Bloated feeling after eating
- Loss of appetite
- Mild nausea
- Heartburn (burning sensation behind the breastbone)
When stomach cancer is more advanced, symptoms may also include:
- Stomach pain
- Vomiting
- Blood in stool
- Unexplained weight loss

Because advanced stomach cancer is very difficult to treat, it is important to see your doctor as soon as possible if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms. Having one or more of these symptoms does not necessarily mean that you have stomach cancer; there are a number of disorders - such as peptic ulcers - that can cause some of the same symptoms. Your physician will arrange for the appropriate diagnostic tests to ensure that a proper diagnosis can be made and treatment can be initiated at once.
