"I decided respiratory therapy was my calling after my father died of lung cancer. I was fortunate enough to get a scholarship from Edna Hayward - one of the founders of what is now Concord campus. That was 30 years ago, and when I graduated a year later, they hired me! It couldn't have worked out any better. Nowadays everything is computerized and designed for patient safety, and you get to work with physicians who perform miracles. I love it!"

The Pulmonary/Respiratory Departments at John Muir Health Medical Centers in Walnut Creek and Concord specialize in pulmonary diseases and asthma, including lung education and support. Both campuses are certified Stroke Centers with their own ICUs, CCUs and high-volume Emergency Departments, and are well-staffed with Board-certified Pulmonologists.

The Concord campus specializes in Cardiac Surgery, and our Pulmonary /Respiratory Therapy department has the crucial role of aggressively weaning post-cardiac surgery patients from ventilator care. Other services provided include the use of Nitric Oxide to treat pulmonary hypertension, bedside pulmonary function testing and emergency bedside bronchoscopy assistance.

The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center operates in the John Muir Behavioral Health Center at the Concord campus.

Walnut Creek campus also maintains a complete Pulmonary Function Laboratory and a 3-chamber Hyperbaric 02 Program. As the only Level ll Trauma Center in the area we service a greater number of emergency cases and helipad transports, and house a busy Neuro ICU and a Level lll Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Complete Sleep Apnea studies are performed at the Contra Costa Sleep Center, a physician-owned entity affiliated with John Muir Health. Only support procedures, such as Pulse Oximetry and CPAP evaluations are performed at each campus.
