"The reward in social work for me is helping people deal with the issues and challenges that hospitalization can bring, and capitalizing on my problem solving skills. People who come in to the hospital don't check their problems at the door. That's why we're involved in psychiatric as well as medical and psychosocial issues. It's exciting and challenging and ever-changing. And for highly motivated, articulate and caring individuals, it's a chance to develop meaningful, professional relationships and make a positive impact on patients' lives."
Medical Social Work is a sub-discipline of Social Work. Medical Social Workers typically work in a hospice or hospital setting; have-an MSW or MSSW, and work with patients and their families in need of psychosocial help.
They assess the patient's and family's psychosocial functioning and intervene as necessary. Interventions may include connecting patients and families to necessary resources and supports in the community; providing psychotherapy, supportive counseling, or grief counseling; or helping a patient to expand and strengthen their network of social supports. Medical Social Workers.
Social Services at both the Concord and Walnut Creek campuses are provided to John Muir Health patients and their families to ensure that a patient's illness, recovery, and safe transition from one care setting to another are considered within the context of his/her biopsychosocial needs, and the specific demands and opportunities of their environment.
Social Workers focus on psychosocial factors including family relationships; living arrangements; the patient's developmental history; and economic, cultural, religious, educational and vocational background, as they impinge on the understanding, treatment and relapse prevention of the patient's medical condition.
As members of interdisciplinary teams, Social Workers contribute to program development, treatment planning and review for all patients, and collaborate in the development and maintenance of the therapeutic milieu.
If you believe in a holistic approach to social work, you should consider applying at John Muir Health.
