Intensive Care Nursery In The Mother/Baby Unit
John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek has the only licensed Community Level III Intensive Care Nursery in Contra Costa County - the most advanced Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the Diablo Valley. John Muir's newborn transport and stabilization team transfers neonates from other hospital nurseries to our ICN for specialized care.
The 19-bed unit has a capacity for nine intensive care babies, or up to 15-intermediate/continuing-care babies and features one isolation room. On staff Neonatologists provide around-the-clock care for these high-risk patients. The NICU can capably manage all premature and sick newborns except for those who require ECMO (extracorporeal membranous oxygenation) and babies who need neonatal surgery. Fewer than 20 babies a year need such high level treatment, and they are transferred to Children's Hospital in Oakland.
