Overview
This two-day Continuing Medical Education activity is for health care professionals involved in the prevention and management of colorectal cancer. The course will highlight the evidence based practice guidelines and leading edge technology now available in improving outcomes for patients with colorectal cancer.
On the first day, participants will hear lectures from nationally known experts on surveillance, genetics, imaging, minimally invasive surgical techniques and multimodality treatment protocols. The second day will focus on surgical techniques and will include a live telesurgery and a hands-on cadaver lab.
Target Audience
The course is intended for medical and radiation oncologists, general surgeons, colorectal surgeons, family practitioners, internists, gastroenterologists, pathologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other allied health professionals interested in surveillance, diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer.
Course Objectives
Participants should be able to:
- Discuss benefits and limitations of optical and virtual colonoscopy in managing malignant polyps
- Describe imaging modalities available for staging colorectal cancer
- Discuss multidisciplinary approaches to local and systemic treatment of advanced cancers of the colon and rectum
- Identify management techniques for transverse colon cancers, obstructing cancers and malignancy complicating ulcerative colitis
- Describe the utilization of pure laparoscopy and hand assisted laparoscopy
- Define and practice minimally invasive diagnostic and treatment techniques in a hands-on cadaver lab with faculty guidance
CME Credit is 14 Hours for both days.
