Our Donors

When you make a gift to John Muir Health Foundation, you join a family of John Muir Health patients and friends who share a commitment to improving the future of medical care in our community.

We'd like to introduce you to some of our benefactors. In their own words, they explain why they invest in our programs.

The Freeman Family

A family tribute

Erik & Celeste HaakThe Dave Freeman family lost wife and mother Andra Freeman in October 2001 to metastatic melanoma. In her memory, Dave and his four children created a fund through John Muir Health Foundation to help educate community members about the signs of early stage melanoma and strategies for preventing the disease. This fund was also created to honor 3-North nurses at John Muir Medical Center-Walnut Creek for their skill and compassion throughout Andi's treatment. The Moraga family asked friends who wished to remember Andi to make contributions to the fund.

After the initial donations from family and friends, Dave and his children considered other ways to raise money to support the fund. Among the more successful fundraisers was an event open to the public featuring a blood drive, bone marrow drive, health & fitness fair, and Jazzercise classes. The fund has also received major support from the family members' employers, from Dave's partners at Moss Adams LLP on behalf of his retirement, and from the family members themselves. The goal was to raise public awareness of the importance of preventing melanoma and identifying it in the early stages of the disease, and to raise enough money to establish a named endowment. In 2007, through the tireless efforts of the Freeman family and support from Sherryl Stientjes, Director of Nursing, the John Muir Health Foundation was proud to announce the establishment of the Andi Freeman Memorial Endowment for Melanoma Education.

Margery Sterns

A supporter since the beginning

Margery Sterns"I've been a supporter since the beginning of the dream," Marge says. She and her husband, Donald Sterns, M.D. helped raise the initial funding for the community hospital and Dr. Sterns became the first chief of radiology.

Margery, a former professional dancer with years of business experience, has used her talents to orchestrate many events for the John Muir Health Foundation and other non-profits. She is a member of the John Muir Health Foundation Board of Directors; the Heritage, President's, and Muir Society Gold giving circles; and a charter member of the John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek Campus Auxiliary.

After Dr. Sterns' death, his colleagues recognized him by naming the Sterns Conference Room, and Margery endowed an annual lecture in his honor.
