Mission and Guiding Principles

Our Grantmaking Mission: John Muir Health funds our operations and grantmaking, and has given us our community benefit mission of improving the health and well-being of people residing within central and east Contra Costa County communities who are un- or under-insured, who have limited access to health care, who are most at-risk for poor health, and are most likely to experience disparities in healthcare. Our goal is to expand access to affordable, high quality and competent health care, as well as to supportive services that connect to health care and enhance well-being.

Our Guiding Principles:

• Making a Difference: We choose to be innovative and proactive in our grantmaking because we are committed to making a difference in the health of underserved and overlooked people and communities.
• Empowering People: We encourage people to assume responsibility for their health and to participate in the development and assessment of all health-related programs that we fund for their benefit.
• Valuing Diversity: We seek to award our grants to organizations that respond to and reflect the rich diversity of the local communities and people residing in our service area.
• Valuing Connections: We seek to develop and participate actively in partnerships with organizations and people who share our health-related mission and guiding principles.
• Building Capacity: We are committed to investing in the administrative and governance capabilities of nonprofit organizations as well as the capacity of these organizations to help the people they serve to achieve their vision and goals.
• Valuing Learning: We practice and promote continuous learning by being open to new ideas and different points of view, and by promoting best practices for managing and governing nonprofit organizations.
