Welcome to MuirLab, the outreach laboratory service of John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek Campus. MuirLab is a full-service facility offering comprehensive clinical and anatomic pathology testing to the medical community. In the tradition of John Muir Medical Center, we strive to maintain excellence in MuirLab and to provide you with the best professional assistance in the field of laboratory medicine.
Our laboratories employ more than 500 highly trained professionals, clinical laboratory scientists, technicians, and support staff. State-of-the-art instrumentation, techniques, and data processing advancements enable us to deliver sophisticated MuirLab backed by extensive quality assurance programs and accredited by the College of American Pathologists.

As part of John Muir Health/John Muir Physician Network, MuirLab will bill all insurance carriers on behalf of our customers. However, it is the responsibility of our customers to check with their insurance provider prior to utilizing our laboratory in order to ensure their insurance benefits cover MuirLab services as part of John Muir Health/John Muir Physician Network.

Blood Products
MuirLab offers a full service Transfusion Department. Requests for outpatient infusion of blood products should be made through MuirLab Client Services. Specimens for cross-match for outpatients and pre-op patients must be drawn at the main laboratory at John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek Campus, 1601 Ygnacio Valley Road, Walnut Creek, CA 94598.
Client Laboratory Technical Assistance
MuirLab is available to assist in evaluating the technical and operational aspects of a client's laboratory. Our day-to-day exposure to the latest developments in the medical laboratory field keeps us current in the state-of-the-art technology and enables us to make objective evaluations of laboratory practices.
Clients may request consultation services with respect to their own laboratory operations, compliance with CLIA '88, OSHA, and state regulations, as well as assistance with quality control and quality assurance policies and procedures. A nominal fee, based on the consulting laboratorian's time, is charged for this special service.
Client Consultation Services
MuirLab's pathologists, Drs. Scott , Poore, Curtis, Larner and Hwang are available for medical and technical consultation on laboratory test results and/or clinical conditions. Our managers and technical staff are also available whenever needed to resolve problems or answer questions, either by telephone or personal visit.

Our commitment is to maintain communication with our customers, patients and co-workers to better understand their needs and concerns with emphasis on building trust which will enable us to maintain a long-term relationship.
We have 13 well trained Client Service Reps and 3 Problem Resolution Specialists on staff to assist you with your needs.

Continuing Education
For any of our client's staff members, CME accredited sessions on technical topics of interest may be arranged on request. We also provide detailed information, training, and instructions in such matters as patient preparation, phlebotomy, specimen collection, scheduling, and billing.
Courier Services
Courier services are available for transporting specimens to MuirLab from your location. This service provides delivery of specimens (including frozen) under controlled conditions. Special courier services will be established if appropriate arrangements can be made. Our MuirLab sales representative is available to discuss the criteria with you. Pick up frequency is determined by referral volume.
Our couriers provide regular Monday through Friday pick up and delivery service for laboratory specimens and patient reports 1-3 times per day. Special Saturday service is available if prescheduled. If you have laboratory specimens for MuirLab and are not on a regular courier schedule, please call Client Services to arrange for a special pick up.
Customized Test Panels
MuirLab will compose customized test panels to meet the needs of various medical specialties of its clientele. These panels will be pre-printed on the individual physician's test requisition forms.

We are proud of our laboratory, our technical capabilities, and the people who work together to provide the highest quality MuirLab to the medical community. Referral Testing
MuirLab is a full-service laboratory. We perform most tests at our own facilities, however, a few highly complex procedures are referred to accredited reference laboratories, primarily ARUP Clinical Laboratories. The fees for referred tests are subject to change, and a nominal charge is added to cover handling expenses.
Repeat Testing
Repeat determinations will be performed at no charge if, in the opinion of the referring physician, a distinct variance exists between the clinical picture and the laboratory result. For this reason, we routinely store most of the serum specimens for 5 days. Other specimens are kept for shorter time periods according to their stability. Please contact our client service department for details regarding repeat testing.
Patient Service Centers and Phlebotomy Service
MuirLab provides specimen collection at various Patient Service Centers within a 50 mile radius of John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek Campus and Walnut Creek. We provide specimen collection services 7 days a week. Refer to the MuirLab Patient Service Center Location Guide and Map for details.
MuirLab Patient Service Centers are staffed by over 50 certified Phlebotomists that are thoroughly trained in the techniques needed for the collection of blood, urine, sputum, stool and throat cultures. All Phlebotomists are also trained in BLS and customer service.
