In addition to offering a full range of traditional cardiac surgeries, John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek Campus and John Muir Medical Center, Concord Campus cardiac surgeons were among the first in the area to perform beating heart surgery — an advanced cardiac surgery technique in which cardiac bypass surgery is performed while the patient's heart continues to beat. This allows the surgeons to operate without placing the patient on the cardiopulmonary bypass system used in conventional cardiac surgeries.
Advanced minimally invasive valve replacement surgery is also performed at both medical
centers using a small incision through the breastbone. Patients undergoing
advanced minimally invasive cardiac bypass or valve replacement surgery are able to
return to their normal activities more rapidly, have less scarring and pain, and
a shorter hospitalization following surgery than with other conventional open
heart surgeries.
