Keynote:

Charles Wilson M.D., M.S.H.A., Sc.D.
Professor Emeritus of Neurosurgery, University of California San Francisco, a Senior Fellow in the Institute for the Future, and a Senior Advisor in the Health Technology Center.

Dr. Wilson has authored 600 scientific publications and is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He serves on the Governing Board of the Tulane University Health Sciences Center, the Tulane University Board of Administrators, and the Blue Shield of California Medical Policy Committee on Quality and Technology. His interests are long-range forecasting of health care and medical technologies, and the evolution of service lines with the health care delivery system. Currently, he is an independent consultant in the Life Sciences.

Paul Ekman Ph.D.
Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California at San Francisco for 32 years. Dr. Ekman developed a research program supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the DOD. Dr. Ekman's interests have focused on "nonverbal" behavior, the expression and physiology of emotion and interpersonal deception. His many honors include the Distinguished Scientifi c Contribution Award of the American Psychology Association and an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Chicago.

William Coplin M.D. Associate Professor, Department of Neurology and Neurological Surgery, Medical Director of the Neurotrauma Center/Intensive Care Unit, and Chief of Neurology at Detroit Receiving Hospital, Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Coplin is the co-founder of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. In addition, Dr. Coplin is on the Editorial Board for Neurocritical Care. His clinical and research interests include NeuroIntensive /critical care and cerebrovascular disease.

Course Objectives


  1. Provide a general understanding of prevalent conditions affecting the Central Nervous System, including dementia, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and neoplasms.
  2. Outline the current evidence-based practice guidelines for diagnostic workups and available treatments for the above conditions.
  3. Improve the integration of neuroscience principles into medical practice and understand the appropriate candidates for neuroscience specialty referral.
