Our hands serve many purposes. They include writing, eating, dressing, and designing and creating art. To perform these tasks, our hands require feedback on movement and sensation. When the hand is injured or hurt, all the different types of tissues that make the hand function, need to be taken into account. The field of hand surgery deals with both surgical and non-surgical treatment of conditions and problems that take place in the hand all the way up the arm to the shoulder.

Prevention

After injury or illness, making the hand work is the main objective. Hand Therapy can provide individualized exercises and activities specifically to achieve function. John Muir Health provides Hand Therapy in our outpatient therapy clinics in Danville, Rossmoor, Walnut Creek, Concord and Brentwood. We have over seven certified hand therapists. These therapists have met the criteria set by the American Society of Hand Therapists and have passed the exam allowing them to call themselves Hand Therapists.

Hand surgery is part of the practice of general surgery, orthopedic surgery, and plastic surgery. Many John Muir Health surgeons have additional training or fellowships specific to the hand. For referral to a hand surgeon call John Muir Health's Physician Referral Service at (925) 941-2244.
