The Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit is a dedicated, licensed facility within John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek Campus, offering a thorough and interdisciplinary approach to rehabilitation to maximize recovery after an injury or illness.
We offer personalized, comprehensive rehabilitation care to patients recovering from, but not limited to:
Professional clinical skills, personal trust and plenty of hard work combine to produce significant patient satisfaction and results, often exceeding national outcome standards in key areas of length of stay, improvement in function and discharge home. The John Muir Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit provides intensive therapy programs, rehabilitation physician and nursing services that address your individual needs.
The Acute Inpatient Rehab Unit is accredited by the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Hospital Organizations, (JCAHO). Our Brain Injury Program has received the distinction of JCAHO Best Practice.
Upon physician request, the Referral Development Coordinator will evaluate your rehabilitation needs and address the requirements for admission. This includes coordinating insurance verification and providing you and your family with information about the Rehabilitation Unit.

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit offers a caring and safe environment in which patients and their caregivers learn to manage impairments affecting self-care, mobility, communication, cognitive skills, and other activities of daily living.
A multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers, and therapists assess the needs of the patient and establish the treatment plan and goals. A daily treatment schedule is set up based on the individual needs and goals, and reinforced 24 hours a day with all members of the team.
Discharge planning begins at admission. The Case Manager or Social Worker will assist you and your family with all discharge needs, including ordering of equipment and providing referrals to home care, outpatient therapy or community services.
Your family and caregivers are encouraged to be involved in the rehabilitation process. Please check with the treatment team to participate or observe a treatment session. Please be advised that some restrictions to visitation may apply depending on the injury or illness of our patients. Other visitors are welcome to come for brief periods in the evening or weekends.
In addition to the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit located at John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek Campus, different levels of care are provided to our hospitalized patients at John Muir Health. Therapy services are provided upon physician order to patients with conditions such as joint replacement, stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple trauma, and other medical conditions related to pulmonary, cardiac, oncology or pain requiring acute hospitalization.

Rehabilitation Therapists work closely with physicians, nurses and case managers to progress patients from the acute hospital to the next level of care as appropriate to the patient's needs and desired outcomes. Effective case coordination is an integral part of our hospital Rehabilitation Services.
Our programs are designed to meet the needs of patients at various stages of their recovery, from acute rehabilitation to outpatient therapy.
