What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a chronic condition in which excess fluid accumulates in the tissues causing swelling in the arms, legs or trunk. The swelling occurs when lymph vessels and/or nodes are impaired from a congenital condition (primary lymphedema) or following surgical removal or radiation of lymph nodes for treament of cancer (secondary lymphedema). While there is no cure, proper treatment, patient education and careful home management can help to keep lymphedema under control.
