For many people with lung conditions, the key to a better life is rehabilitation.

People who complete a pulmonary rehabilitation program have, on average, fewer hospitalizations and emergency room visits. Our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program provides comprehensive outpatient care and support for people with chronic lung disease and their families. For these patients, the program has been a life-saving pathway between inactivity and activity, isolation and socialization, depression and hope, and from observing to participating in life.

Who Can Benefit?

People with the following lung conditions can benefit from pulmonary rehabilitation:

Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases:

Other Lung Conditions:

Restrictive Pulmonary Diseases:

The Program

Through a multi-disciplinary team of health care professionals, John Muir Lung Health Services provides participants and their family members with training, support and tools that will help them meet the day-to-day challenges of living with lung disease. It can help them achieve the highest level of independence possible. Participants meet two to three times weekly for six weeks. To ensure individual attention, only four to six patients are accepted into each class. Education and graduated exercises are integral components of the program.

Some topics discussed are:

Program Follow-up

Upon completion of the formal course, participants are encouraged to continue in an ongoing maintenance exercise program, offered at multiple locations, and the monthly educational/support group.

Family Participation

Spouses and other family members are encouraged to attend the program with the participant. An understanding of lung disease and lifestyle changes often improves the quality of life of the entire family.

Financial Information

Our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is approved by Medicare and by most private insurance companies. Our staff can assist in determining your individual insurance coverage.
