The weight-loss surgery evaluation and insurance approval process can be lengthy. Typically, it takes several months from the start of the process to your surgery date.

The first step in the surgery approval process is a screening consultation with our nurse specialist. This screening will help determine if you are a candidate for surgery with the John Muir Weight Loss Surgery Center at John Muir Medical Center, Concord Campus. After you have read this section please proceed to the Screening Questionnaire for completion.

If it is determined that you are a surgical candidate, the nurse specialist will schedule a consultation appointment with one of our surgeons. You must also have a psychological evaluation prior to surgery. If you are currently under the care of a psychological professional, it may be possible for that person to complete your psychological evaluation with guidelines provided by the John Muir Weight Loss Surgery Center.

You will be scheduled to attend pre-operative teaching classes with the nurse specialist and the dietitian. These classes will provide you with detailed information about what to expect in the hospital and during recovery. The dietary and lifestyle instructions following surgery will also be reviewed extensively. You are encouraged to bring a family member or support person to these classes.

You must attend at least one weight-loss surgery support group meeting prior to your surgery. This will give you a valuable opportunity to talk with patients who have had weight-loss surgery, and ensure it is the right decision for you. The monthly support group for the John Muir Weight Loss Surgery Center at John Muir Medical Center, Concord Campus is led by the nurse specialist. She will provide you with information on the time and location of the support group. If you do not live in the area, you may attend a weight-loss surgery support group closer to your home.
