For Sleeve Gastrectomy and Lap-Band patients, the weight loss rate may be a little slower, and excess body weight loss overall may be lower than that following Gastric Bypass or Duodenal Switch. No matter which surgery you choose, patients who are very careful about following dietary and exercise recommendations typically have the best results, and may exceed expected weight loss averages. Most weight is usually lost during the first year after surgery, but very motivated patients may continue losing into the second year.

Long term studies show that most weight-related medical problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea, improve significantly or resolve completely if the patient is able to lose even a moderate amount of their excess weight. Weight loss also reduces the risk of developing these medical conditions, and may also improve life expectancy.
