Roux-en-Y Gastric-Bypass surgery is a very effective weight-loss procedure that utilizes stapling and other surgical techniques to create a very small stomach pouch, severely restricting the amount of food that can be consumed at one time. The rest of the stomach is bypassed and no longer receives food. The procedure also bypasses a section of the small intestine, which reduces the amount of calories absorbed from food and fluids consumed. A high-protein diet and lifelong vitamin and mineral supplements are necessary to prevent deficiencies.
