Surgery provides the tools for effective permanent weight-loss, but success is not guaranteed. A commitment to making and maintaining major, permanent changes in diet and lifestyle are necessary for optimal results. If you continue making poor food choices or binge-eating, you may not achieve your expected weight-loss goals.

To achieve maximum weight-loss success, patients are counseled to adopt a protein-focused diet for life, eating just three small, healthy meals daily. Patients must avoid snacking and eating sugary, starchy or high-fat foods. They also must start engaging in aerobic exercise at least four days a week. A lifelong regimen of vitamin and mineral supplementation must be started soon after surgery to avoid deficiencies of iron, B-12 and calcium. Regular blood tests are required to monitor health status. Medications containing aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, naproxen, etc.) cannot be taken safely once you have had weight-loss surgery due to the high risk of ulcers. Your doctor can recommend safer alternative medications for pain management.

The John Muir Weight Loss Surgery Center provides a team of supportive professionals to work with you and your family to help you to achieve the best results.
