The majority of research studies on Gastric Bypass and Duodenal Switch report an average excess body weight loss two years after surgery of 70 to 80 percent. For example, a person who is 100 pounds over his or her ideal weight (BMI of 24) would be considered successful following surgery if they can lose 70 to 80 pounds and maintain that loss for at least five years. Some very motivated patients are able to lose 100 percent of their excess body weight and maintain that loss indefinitely.

Because the Sleeve Gastrectomy and Lap-Band surgeries only restrict food intake and do not decrease calorie absorption, the weight loss success of these procedures is more dependent on patients following dietary and exercise instructions. The majority of Sleeve Gastrectomy and Lap-Band research studies report an average excess body weight loss two years after surgery of 50 to 60 percent. Patients who are very compliant with dietary instructions may lose much more.

With any of the weight loss surgeries, although the majority of patients may not reach their ideal weight range, most enjoy tremendous improvement in their health, appearance, self-esteem, mobility, and ability to engage in physical activities.
