Fernando R. Otero, MD, FACS

Dr. Otero is a board-certified general and vascular surgeon, and a specialist in advanced minimally-invasive surgery. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He completed his medical education at the University of California, San Diego in 1983, and his surgical residency at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, Calif.

Dr. Otero has been a pioneer in the field of laparoscopic surgery since 1989, when he performed the first laparoscopic appendectomy in California, followed by the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal) in Northern California in 1990. He has continued to be a leader in advanced laparoscopic procedures and has been responsible for training many surgeons in the use of these techniques. He is a partner of Bay Area Surgical Specialists located in Walnut Creek, Calif.

Brian Chin, M.D.

Dr. Chin is a board-certified general surgeon and a specialist in advanced minimally-invasive surgery. He served as Chief Resident during his surgical residency at the University of California, San Diego in 2005, and was the recipient of the Halasz Award for Surgical Consultation in addition to a number of other honors. He then completed a fellowship in advanced minimally-invasive surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, where he was in charge of bariatric surgical service. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He is a partner of Bay Area Surgical Specialists located in Walnut Creek.

Anne Timberlake, RN, MPH, MSN, CNS

Anne Timberlake

Anne is a clinical nurse specialist with graduate degrees in critical care nursing and health education. She has extensive experience counseling bariatric surgery patients before and after surgery since 1999. She is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Angie Miatke Hunt, R.D.
Angie is a registered clinical dietitian specializing in nutrition counseling and behavioral changes to promote a healthy lifestyle.


Psychological Support Therapist


Linda Passey, LCSW
Linda is a licensed clinical social worker and therapist practicing in Contra Costa County. She is also on staff at the John Muir Behavioral Health Center. She specializes in treating adolescents and adults with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and health issues. Linda offers individual, family, or group therapy and support for the John Muir Weight Loss Surgery Center participants.


Program Assistant


Dalora Cortez, Program Assistant
Dalora assists the nurse specialist to reply to patient inquiries, schedule appointments, verify insurance benefits, and assist patients as they move through their weight loss surgery journey.
