Hematology is the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders. At John Muir Health we have an experienced group of board-certified Hematologists/Oncologists who care for patients in outpatient and inpatient settings. Hematology is generally divided into two types, Benign Hematology and Malignant Hematology.
Benign Hematology encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal bleeding and clotting disorders and abnormal blood counts (both high and low blood counts). A few examples of disorders managed by Hematologists are Von Willebrand Disease, an inherited bleeding disorder, and anemias of various causes. At John Muir Health, we offer an advanced treatment program, apheresis, which is useful in a variety of conditions managed by Hematologists/Oncologists as well as Neurologists.
Malignant Hematology is the diagnosis and treatment of blood associated cancers, such as leukemias and lymphomas. At John Muir Health we have an excellent team of physicians, nurses, and pharmacists experienced in the management of acute and chronic leukemias, including the initiation of therapy for acute leukemias. Our partnership with UCSF Health includes monthly conferences to review and discuss challenging cases in Hematology.
If you’ve received an abnormal blood test result, your primary care physician may refer you to a Hematologist/ Medical Oncologist who can help diagnose and treat blood disorders.
