The Fall Prevention Program of Contra Costa County strives to reduce deaths, preventable injuries, and loss of independence associated with falls of seniors and persons with disabilities. The program provides educational support and home safety repairs.

A 70-year-old, wheelchair-bound Pittsburg woman required bathing assistance. An in-home assessment yielded recommendations for bathroom grab bars, a handheld shower, and a transfer bench. After the installations, the participant told the program manager it had been years since she had been able to bathe independently. She was delighted to be able to bathe safely and regain a small amount of independence.
A 69-year-old Oakley resident who is the primary caregiver for his wife had difficulty assisting her with bathing. Following the installation of grab bars and a handheld shower, he said with much enthusiasm, "The bathroom is great. It is much easier to help my wife and I feel so much more confident about her safety."
