Joint UCSF Health/John Muir Health Development Company Signs Lease to Develop Outpatient Center in Berkeley

Jointly released by UCSF Health and John Muir Health on behalf of BayHealth

September 13, 2016 - BayHealth, a UCSF Health/John Muir Health joint venture company, has signed a 96,000 sq. ft. lease, within which it plans to open a new outpatient center in Berkeley to serve patients in the Foundry 31 building at 3100 San Pablo Ave. The new facility is expected to open in early 2018.

“Alameda is one of the fastest growing counties in the Bay Area, and the Oakland/Berkeley area is undergoing a major transformation,” said Chris Willrich, Chief Executive Officer of BayHealth. “This new ambulatory care hub will create a convenient, full-service destination for care that will both improve access and provide a care delivery system that modernizes how the consumer experiences health care.

This is also an ideal location with onsite parking available and excellent access via public transportation and by bicycle.”

The Outpatient Center will feature an Urgent Care Center, which will be open during the day and after regular business hours and on weekends; primary care practices staffed by John Muir Health’s Physician Network; a broad array of rotating specialty physicians from UCSF Health and John Muir Health; and  imaging and lab services. By providing a range of services, including primary care, BayHealth aims to partner with patients to better manage their health and prevent trips to a hospital for emergency or inpatient care.

To that end, UCSF and John Muir Health physicians will work closely with care coordinators at the center to provide care for patients with a range of health care needs, from those who are generally healthy to patients with chronic conditions. Their efforts will include monitoring programs to ensure medication compliance and tele-health programs to identify symptoms before they necessitate a trip to the hospital. As an alternative to the Emergency Room for patients not experiencing life-threatening emergencies, the Urgent Care Center also will be able to treat patients with conditions ranging from sprains and bruises, to cuts requiring stitches or conditions requiring an intravenous (IV) infusion.

“A number of Oakland/Berkeley residents already access UCSF Health and John Muir Health services so this provides a ‘one-stop clinic’ for them to receive care closer to home. It also enhances the access to care and services available to the entire community,” said Cal Knight, chair of the BayHealth Board of Directors and president and CEO of John Muir Health.

“BayHealth’s outpatient center in Berkeley is exactly the kind of offering we want to provide to Bay Area patients,” said Mark Laret, president and CEO of UCSF Health. “It provides patients with local, expert care that emphasizes early diagnosis and intervention, and puts them in a position to receive specialized care when they need it.”

The Berkeley Outpatient Center will be the first joint UCSF Health/John Muir Health project of its kind through BayHealth. BayHealth’s activities are focused on supporting Canopy Health, the Bay Area accountable care network established by UCSF Health, John Muir Health and other leading providers. BayHealth will contribute to Canopy Health’s success through development of outpatient centers, such as the one in Berkeley, with an emphasis on enhancing access in geographies without a significant John Muir Health or UCSF Health ambulatory presence. BayHealth is also investing in IT integration and consumer-facing solutions (such as an online Patient Portal) across the Canopy Health network.

“BayHealth and Canopy Health are distinct companies, but highly complementary in their purposes,” said Knight. “This exciting development is perfectly aligned with our original vision for the UCSF Health/John Muir Health affiliation. It supports the access needs of the Canopy Health network, and provides a platform for true innovation in quality and patient experience.”

Canopy Health currently includes more than 4,000 physicians and 12 hospitals throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Its goal is to offer patients access to care in the appropriate setting, whether that be the physician’s office, outpatient center (such as the Outpatient Center in Berkeley), hospital, or non-traditional settings -- such as home, office, or virtual -- ideally near their office or home, with access to specialty expertise and care at affiliated acute care hospitals, should they need it.
