If you can’t remember when you bought your last mascara wand, it might be time to replace it. Even though makeup isn’t required by the FDA to have an expiration date, it has a shelf life that all consumers should know about.
Eye makeup and all-natural cosmetics should be replaced often because they can harbor bacteria and can cause infections. Experts recommend retiring mascara after three months and monitoring cosmetics lacking preservatives. Discard a product if its color has changed or if it develops an odor.
Protect yourself by storing cosmetics in a cool place away from sunlight; by not sharing makeup or using “testers” at department stores; and by using clean applicators.
