Common Spinal Problems

Your spine is a flexible column of 33 bones, or vertebrae, running the length of your back. The first vertebra, which holds up the globe of your head, is the atlas. The rest of your spine bears much of the weight of your body. As millions of people with chronic back problems know, when you injure your spine the consequences can be debilitating.

Some of the most common spinal problems include:

  • Fractures
  • Herniated disks
  • Sciatica
  • Scoliosis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Sprains
  • Osteoporosis

We work with you to develop a treatment plan that works for you.

Spinal Tumors & Cancer

We have deep expertise in treating patients with spinal tumors, as well as cancers that have metastasized (spread) to the spine from others parts of the body.

A condition this complex requires a transdisciplinary approach, in which various medical experts coordinate to provide a high level of comprehensive care, making sure you and your caregivers are aware of all the treatment options and are involved in the process of getting you well again.

Traumatic Injuries

Rapid diagnosis and treatment provide the best chance of surviving a traumatic injury. Critically injured patients are brought by helicopter or ambulance directly from the injury site to our Trauma Center.

The Walnut Creek Medical Center is one of the few Bay Area hospitals with a heliport. This allows patients to be taken to the trauma center by helicopter from anywhere in the Bay Area in just minutes.

The center has served as Contra Costa County’s only trauma center. County guidelines dictate which patients are taken to the center, which has continued to be re-verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) as a Level II Trauma Center since 1986.
