Improving Health through Education

Our mission to improve the health of the communities we serve goes beyond the walls of our hospitals and doctors’ offices. Last year John Muir Health Wellness Services reached more than 5,000 patients and others in the community through year-round classes covering topics like chronic disease management, mind/body wellness and parenting. A complete listing of classes, most of which are free, is available online

One of our most popular offerings is a class series for new parents.  The sessions focus on helping new moms and dads navigate the wonderful, sometimes bewildering stages of early parenthood. During the weekly sessions, an educator guides parents and their babies through discussions about everything from infant eating schedules to baby sign language, to exploring developmental play and games.

Tara Tarantino, MD, a family medicine doctor, said she always hears great things from people she refers to classes. Now, she’s taking a class for new parents herself.

“I’m seeing firsthand how much support new parents receive, the wonderful atmosphere, the compassion I and others get,” said Dr. Tarantino. “Meeting weekly, learning from an expert and talking with other parents who are going through what you’re going through, it’s been incredible. It’s the greatest thing I could have done for my family.”

Our clinical experts and experienced educators also help patients develop strategies for managing chronic diseases or conditions. These classes focus on helping people manage asthma, create healthy nutritional habits, increase physical activity and minimize the effects of diabetes. In a separate series of classes focused on mind and body, participants learn how to reduce stress through mindfulness and develop more positivity in their lives.

“Addressing the health education needs and interests of patients and others in our communities is a vital part of helping John Muir Health fulfill its mission,” said Sandra Washington, manager, Wellness Services. “When it comes to helping patients reach and maintain optimal health, we’re proud to share the expertise of our educators and providers.”
