John Muir Health Medical Centers Receive ‘A’ Grades for Patient Safety

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (May 4, 2020) – The Leapfrog Group, a Washington D.C-based organization aiming to improve health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers, released new Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. John Muir Health’s Concord and Walnut Creek Medical Centers were awarded an ‘A’ for efforts to protect patients from harm and meeting the highest safety standards in the U.S.

“Each day, patients trust our team to provide them with the highest quality health care services, safely,” said Jane Willemsen, executive vice president and president of hospital operations at John Muir Health. “Now, more than ever, we take the trust placed in us to heart and are committed to continually working toward the highest possible standard of safety.”

“Our goal is to inform patients about local hospitals with the best safety measures in place and the strongest records,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Every hospital can earn an ‘A’ grade, and we're proud of the hospitals that are committed to making an effort to protect patients from harm.”

“We appreciate and thank the physicians, nurses, and clinical and support staff who have been involved in developing a strong safety culture at John Muir Health,” said Irving Pike, M.D., chief medical officer at the health system. “Our continued focus on high reliability practices and low-risk behaviors is leading directly to safer care for our patients and the communities we serve.”

Developed under the guidance of an Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to approximately 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.
